A Late Thanksgiving Weekend Recap!

Happy Late Thanksgiving to you all, friends! I hope your holiday was filled with an overabundance of delicious food and loving family. My apologies for the lateness of this post – it’s been getting hectic around here with finals next week!!

In Thanksgiving’s prior, my plate would be about 60% mashed potatoes, 20% corn, 5% cranberry sauce, and 5% turkey. (and I usually never finished the turkey!!). I was a very picky eater growing up and very reluctant to try new foods. I don’t know what it is – but ever since I began eating better I’m so much more open to eating thinks I never liked before – even fish!

In preparation for thanksgiving, I saw some of the biggest yams of my life. The little kid in me was so excited!!

Wednesday night was Kayla’s 21st birthday, wooooo!!! Naturally we celebrated in accordance with the ancient tradition of buying her shots and getting her drunk. Don’t worry – I kept her safe and she handled herself quite well! Happy Birthday Kayla!!!

Thursday morning, I woke up around 7:30 and started cooking right away – for five hours. Cooking is exhausting! I made a bunch of leaner versions of my favorite recipes:

1. Homemade cranberry sauce from Mind Body Green

2. Stringbean casserole from Tone It Up

3. Maple roasted brussel sprouts from Gabby’s Gluten Free (These were a huge hit – I should’ve made more!!)

4. Sweet potato casserole from Dashing Dish

5. Stuffing from Sarah Fit (mine wasn’t gluten free or paleo since I put 1 slice of ezekiel bread in it..everyone said it tasted just like the stuffing they know and love!)

6. Raspberry white chocolate chip muffins – myself

7. Mint chocolate chip ‘ice cream’ from The Detoxinista

After cooking all that food, I packed my gym bag and brought all the food over to my aunt’s house where thanksgiving was being held – only about ten minutes from my house. I felt super guilty for not being able to meet my other gym friends at 9:15 for one last crossfit workout before gorging ourselves – so I did the WOD at my aunt’s house since they have a barbell there.

The WOD (45 lb or 105 lb) (I obviously did 45…):

  • 5  G2O
  • 12 powercleans
  • 50 squats

Definitely got a good sweat going and got my heart rate up – my back was killing me afterwards! Luckily they had a foam roller at my aunt’s house so I was able to use that to get those kinks out. heh :p

Fast forward to when I’m clean and showered! I was so happy to spend time with my big, crazy family. We usually spend the holidays with my dad’s side of the family, at his sister Genny’s house. Her and my uncle Peter have 3 boys all older than me.  Then there’s their brother, Uncle bob, and his wife, Aunt Jeannie, and their two sons Marc and Dan. Their other brother, Uncle mike and his wife aunt Carol couldn’t make it this year – but their son, my cousin Andrew came with his wife and their new baby Jezebel!! This was my first time meeting here. It’s weird and amazing at the same time to see my family growing!

Eventually, it was time to eat. Because I was so busy cooking that morning, all I had was coffee – I just wasn’t hungry. Do you ever get like that – when you’re cooking, and even though you were hungry when you started, by the time you finish you just don’t feel like eating? That was me!I tried not to stuff my face with appetizers before the main event.

My aunt always sets the food up buffet-style and everyone helps themself. I was suprised at how many people tried the healthy versions I made!

I came, I ate, I conquered. I never wanted to eat again. (Just kidding. I love food. Too much.)

Clockwise: cranberry sauce, stuffing, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, maple roasted brussels, turkey, ham, and mashed potatoes & corn (hey, it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t at least have a *litttle*!)

I ate all the food. and I made $4 for finishing. hehe ;) everyday i’m hustlin!!

This thanksgiving is a special one because something very rare is happening this year – the first night of Hanukkah falls on thanksgiving!! Crazy, right? My Aunt Jeannie gave me this book and thought I would really enjoy this it – and she was right!

Eventually I fell asleep sort of early on the couch while the rest of my family drank and enjoyed each other’s company. I was pooped!

Friday, I just had to sleep in. I was so not feeling getting up early that day! I went black friday shopping in the afternoon and ended up spending quite a while at the mall. It was absolute chaos there. Here’s the damage done that day….

I bought some pants, shirts, jewelry, and a few christmas gifts. Oh! and new boots! yay!

Hanukkah Harry (aka mommy) generously gifted me with some awesome stuff – I got a foam roller, 2 nike jackets, nike cropped running leggings, A HEART RATE MONITOR (WOO!), and a Yankee candle!

Burned 622 calories with a crossfit WOD and some HIIT on the treadmill!

Saturday evening, Kayla and I relaxed in some matching PJ’s and slippers we had bought and sipped chocolate wine, watching Christmas lifetime movies. Because we felt so festive, we thought it an appropriate opportunity to have a little photoshoot for our christmas cards..yes, christmas cards. We had them made, and gave them to our gym friends along with a quest bar! How cute, right!?

Oy, I’m off to study more. I’ll try and make it out alive! :p
